"Asking Directions"

“Asking Directions”
Bunny, Bee and Sunflowers
ACEO – size 2½” X 3½”
Story included
Watercolor and acrylic paint
Strathmore illustration board
September 2009
SOLD

Lost in the tall grass, Bumper the bunny can’t find his sense of direction. Then he begins to have some hope when he finds a little creature to ask which way to go, to get back to his thicket. But all this fellow does is make a lot of buzzing noises and keeps showing him his pointy behind.
I guess everybody has their own agenda and the only way to find your OWN way is to follow your own nose. But don’t ask me; I’m just following my own nose, and the only thing I can tell you about is how to get back to my own thicket, and even then I’m not quite sure.

On this painting I used the same type of cat that I used on the last one, except I made him a “winter” cat with a cool almost ice crystal like background, and I also did this one a little bigger.

"Autumn Flame Point Siamese Cat"

I’ve wanted to do some more oil painting lately, so I started out with this small format 4”X 4” painting of a lovely flame point Siamese cat. This cat’s colors are so beautiful and very autumn like so I just had to put some fall leaves in the background.

“White Kitten & Bumble Bee”
Original ACEO sized painting - 2½” X 3½”
Watercolor and acrylic paint
Strathmore illustration board
September 2009
SOLD

Kitten:
“Good Morning Mr. Bumble Bee.
How do you do today?
Promise not to sting on me,
And we can go and play.”

Bumble Bee:
“The morning sun is on the ridge.
The fields are full of dew.
Let’s romp and play and have some fun,
I’d never sting on you.

Sometimes I do a little painting that just cries out for a poem or story. This one wanted to be a simple children’s poem. I print my little story or poem on an aceo sized card (shown in the pictures above) and include it with the art.

“The Golden Pegasus”
Original ACEO sized painting - 2½” X 3½”
Watercolor and acrylic paint
Stonehenge 90lb paper
September 2009
SOLD

I have been wanted to try my hand at depicting a Pegasus horse. I like the idea of a horse that can fly. So here is my first attempt. If the Pegasus horse was flying in the clouds at sunset, I think that it would appear to be made of gold.

"Behind the Rose Bush"

“Behind that Rose Bush”
Black Oriental Cat & Rose Bush
Image size: 5” X 7”
Paper size: 5¾” X 7¾”
Watercolor, pastel pencil and acrylic paint
Stonehenge heavy weight 90lb paper
Date of completion: September 2009
8” X 10” single black matt included with purchase.
SOLD

An oriental black cat peeks out from behind a rose bush.

I just had to do another painting using this beautiful black oriental cat because I enjoyed doing the last painting so much. This time I wanted to emphasize this cat’s beautiful eyes, so I made him “hide” behind the roses with just one eye and partial hints of his nose and ear showing.
I used the same sort of technique and materials as in the last painting of this cat and roses except I used Stonehenge paper this time. The first piece had a soft cool light and tone whereas this one has more of a late afternoon feeling. I also made the cat's eye a little different color than the last one. I can’t decide which one I like best. They are of the same subject but very different.

"Black Oriental Cat & Roses"

“Black Oriental Cat & Roses”

Watercolor, pastel pencil and acrylic paint
Canson Mi-Teintes heavy weight 98lb paper
Date of completion: September 2009
8” X 10” single black matt included with purchase.
SOLD

This black oriental cat surrounded with roses seems to be like a king in his court.

I found this beautiful picture of a black oriental cat awhile back. His eyes are so intriguing to me and there is something about the way his is sitting that I love. I decided to paint him with roses because they just seem to go together so well.
First I used pastel pencil for my drawing, composition and color notes, then using the pastel pencil like watercolor pencils, I brushed my drawing with water to smooth, model and fix the pastel. Next with acrylic matt medium and acrylic paint I painted many layers using scumbling (light over dark) and glazing (dark over light) to achieve the final effect. It has a finishing coat of acrylic varnish and is sent in a single black matt ready for framing.

Watercolor & acrylic paint
Stonehenge 90lb paper
Date of completion: September 2009

SOLD

This little white oriental kitten is mesmerized by the beauty of a Dahlia blossom.

This is another piece in my “cats & flowers” 5” X 7” series. I am enjoying the “play” of these two complimentary colors. A peach color and its blue-green compliment create such a soft pleasing late afternoon feeling.
