“He came into the world in the middle of the thicket, in one of those little, hidden forest glades which seem to be entirely open but are really screened in on all sides.  There was very little room in it, scarcely enough for him and his mother...........”

The previous text is from the book: “Bambi – A Life in the Woods”, by Felix Salten.
This aceo painting is another addition to my "Bambi" inspired paintings.
There is something I really like about painting deer in the woods.  Maybe it is because I live in the woods myself.

“He came into the world in the middle of the thicket, in one of those little, hidden forest glades which seem to be entirely open but are really screened in on all sides.  There was very little room in it, scarcely enough for him and his mother........."
(but later he began to explore more of his world and met other creatures living in his woods)

This last month I have been doing some reading and among other things I happened to pick up a copy of the original version of “Bambi”.  And it is such a wonderful book. It is called “Bambi – A Life in the Woods”, by Felix Salten.  Although there are very similar elements in it as the Disney version, the actual story is much more fascinating. I loved it and recommend this book to all ages.
This has also inspired me to do some things with deer and creatures of the woods.

The total paper size of this painting is approximately 3¼”X5¼”.
The opening in the matt is 3”X5”.
The outside of the matt is 5”X7”
It is ready for a 5”X7”frame.

"Staying in the Moment"

“Staying in the Moment”
Original small format painting
4”X6” acrylic & colored pencil
On gesso treated card stock
July 2011

.....best to stay on the line
between past and present
delicately balanced in the moment.....

This small format painting began as a little sketch that I made on a piece of 90lb card stock. I thought if I liked the sketch I could transfer it to a piece of watercolor paper or a panel, however I decided that I liked it just the way it was and I didn’t want to risk changing it, so I finished  it with acrylic paint and colored pencil, treated the back of the card stock with a few coats of gesso and varnished it with a few coats of matt and semi-gloss acrylic varnish.  It will come with the media information on the back, signed and dated.

"Dusty Pink Rose Buddies"

"Dusty Pink Rose Buddies"
Original small format painting - 6"X6"
Artist's oil paint on a fine canvas panel
June 2011
Sold - Thank you

We used to have some beautiful rose bushes in our front yard. I took a lot of pictures of their beautiful blooms and I love to paint from my photos. I miss those beautiful bushes. I wish we had been better rose gardeners, but sadly they got a disease and died.  However, I still have my photos and love to look at them and paint from them.  I am using my oil paints again here and have done a lot of glazing. It was great fun. Although I am painting realistically, I am always more interested in a "lyrical" feeling than a strict realistic interpretation.

"Papillon Puppy Dog"

"Papillon Puppy Dog"
Original small format painting - 4"X6"
Artist's oil paint on canvas panel
June 2011
Sold - Thank you

I have not painted a dog since my "best buddy" passed away about 4 years ago.
So I thought I would try one again. I'm also trying my oil paint again. I have such a love hate relationship with oil.  I love to paint with it.  It is so exciting for me.  But it takes so long to dry.  I use a fast drying medium with it but I like to do glazing so I have to wait between coats.  Anyway, hope you like my little puppy dog painting.

"Illusive Inspiration"

“Illusive Inspiration”
cat & butterfly
Original ACEO painting
2½”X3½” – official aceo size
Acrylic paint on gesso treated illustration board
June 2011
Sold - Thank you

I long for the days when the sun was shinning and the air was filled with the butterflies of inspiration filling my mind with ideas.  However, most of the time these days there is only maybe one or two butterflies in the air and I have to really look to “see” their gift of inspiration.  And sometimes it is raining really hard and there are no butterflies to be seen at all and then the inspiration has to come from within.  I pray that God will fill our hearts with sunshine and give us eyes to “see” the butterflies of His inspiration.
This aceo painting was done on 2½”X3½” sized piece of illustration board that I have prepared with 3 coats of gesso.  After I completed the painting I have painted the edges black for a nice display without a frame and have given it two coats of acrylic semi-gloss varnish for protection.  It has been signed in the painting and on the back with the media and date information and will be mailed to you in a plastic sleeve inside a ridged plastic holder.

Original 5”X7” painting
Artist’s acrylic paint
Raymar canvas panel (Canvas mounted to hardboard)
Ready to frame in a 5”X7” frame
June 2011
Sold - Thank you.

I’m playing with opposites here….like dark and light, red and green soft and hard.
Opposites seem to attract and repel at the same time, much like the Yin Yang symbol.
Each one, without the other would not be as distinctive or as harmonious.

The painting is signed on the front by the artist (me) and on the back with information about the media used and the date, etc. This acrylic painting has been finished with a few coats of semi-gloss acrylic varnish.
It is on a canvas hardboard panel so it doesn’t need a matt. You can frame it in a 5”X7” frame.

"Merlyn the Magical Fluff"

“Merlyn the Magical Fluff”
Original 7”X10” painting
Acrylic paint, watercolor and colored pencil
Arches 140lb watercolor paper
Date of work: May 2011
SOLD – (commissioned work)
Merlyn was a sweet gentle silver white Persian cat with a beautiful soul which lives on somewhere in the land over the rainbow bridge where all his best wishes will come true.  His favorite thing to do in this world was to sit on his tile floor and look out the sliding glass door at all the interesting things happening in the back yard, while all the time hoping that there would be chicken in his bowl that evening. In fact he liked chicken so much that his owners often joked about maybe they should get him a fluffy pet baby chick for him to play with someday.

I was given the opportunity to create this painting for a wonderful customer with a loving heart.
Thank you so much.

Finished with acrylic varnish
Date of work: May 2011
Sold - Thank you

I found some primrose plants along the driveway of my house and picked
a few to put into a small vase in order to paint a still life. The next day I
discovered that the petals had fallen off of one of the blossoms. I was
wondering if they just naturally fell off or if they had been knocked off
somehow.  If you look in the reflection in the vase you might discover
a little mouse looking back. ....Maybe he is responsible.

Outside of matt: 5”X7”
Acrylic with pen and ink
Strathmore tinted charcoal paper
Mounted to heavy weight watercolor paper
Matted in a 5”X7” single black matt
April 2011
Sold - Thank you

While munching on some new spring vegetation Oscar Bunny noticed that he had a young chicken on his head wearing a ladybug hat. It might be a delusion, spring fever or just his imagination.

Stacking animals seems to be some kind of theme with me.  Every so often I just have to draw and paint an animal stack. I don’t know why; I just like to do it.
I started this small format painting by drawing the design out with colored pencil and pen and ink on a piece of Strathmore tinted charcoal paper and then I mounted this paper to a heavier weight watercolor paper for strength and finished it with acrylic paint.
This little painting comes to you matted in a 5”X7” black matt with a foam core backer. If you would rather matt it into your own matt, it is easily removed.

Original ACEO painting
2½” X 3½” – official aceo size
Watercolor, colored pencil & acrylic paint
Arches watercolor paper
March 2011
Sold - Thank you

Colorful spring Easter chickens in their new spring hats get ready for the Easter Parade.

This is another aceo about my fascination with multi-colored Easter chickens. I’m talking about the kind that you buy in the stores to put into your Easter basket arrangements.  The old fashioned kind had orange paper covered wire feet and fluffy feathers with little black eyes. I have fond memories of these as a kid. They were found in my room posed with their wire feet bend around lots things.
Of course since I AM old fashioned and “no spring chicken” I like these kind best and I’m still fascinated with them.

I used colored pencil and watercolor to work up the composition and then switched to acrylic paint to finish this little aceo painting. It was given a couple coats of acrylic varnish for protection and will be sent to you in a clear sleeve inside a clear ridged holder.
