In almost every adventure or thriller film that you see there is at least one scene of great peril for the hero or heroin and in every case that I know of the thing to remember in order to be able to escape this danger is always: “Hang On” If one could only just hang on then all will turn out well, but you also have to remember to not let go!

This last month I have been doing some reading and among other things I happened to pick up a copy of the original version of “Bambi”. And it is such a wonderful book. It is called “Bambi – A Life in the Woods”, by Felix Salten. Although there are very similar elements in it as the Disney version, the actual story is much more fascinating. I loved it and recommend this book to all ages.

This has also inspired me to do some things with deer and creatures of the woods.

This small format painting began as a little sketch that I made on a piece of 90lb card stock. I thought if I liked the sketch I could transfer it to a piece of watercolor paper or a panel, however I decided that I liked it just the way it was and I didn’t want to risk changing it, so I finished it with acrylic paint and colored pencil, treated the back of the card stock with a few coats of gesso and varnished it with a few coats of matt and semi-gloss acrylic varnish. It will come with the media information on the back, signed and dated.

We used to have some beautiful rose bushes in our front yard. I took a lot of pictures of their beautiful blooms and I love to paint from my photos. I miss those beautiful bushes. I wish we had been better rose gardeners, but sadly they got a disease and died. However, I still have my photos and love to look at them and paint from them. I am using my oil paints again here and have done a lot of glazing. It was great fun. Although I am painting realistically, I am always more interested in a "lyrical" feeling than a strict realistic interpretation.

I long for the days when the sun was shinning and the air was filled with the butterflies of inspiration filling my mind with ideas. However, most of the time these days there is only maybe one or two butterflies in the air and I have to really look to “see” their gift of inspiration. And sometimes it is raining really hard and there are no butterflies to be seen at all and then the inspiration has to come from within. I pray that God will fill our hearts with sunshine and give us eyes to “see” the butterflies of His inspiration.
This aceo painting was done on 2½”X3½” sized piece of illustration board that I have prepared with 3 coats of gesso. After I completed the painting I have painted the edges black for a nice display without a frame and have given it two coats of acrylic semi-gloss varnish for protection. It has been signed in the painting and on the back with the media and date information and will be mailed to you in a plastic sleeve inside a ridged plastic holder.

After a heavy afternoon play time this playful Persian takes a little nap on the rug. But he is very careful to keep an eye on the yarn ball so he can pounce on it immediately if it dares to move.

I’m playing with opposites here….like dark and light, red and green soft and hard.

Opposites seem to attract and repel at the same time, much like the Yin Yang symbol.

Each one, without the other would not be as distinctive or as harmonious.

Merlyn was a sweet gentle silver white Persian cat with a beautiful soul which lives on somewhere in the land over the rainbow bridge where all his best wishes will come true. His favorite thing to do in this world was to sit on his tile floor and look out the sliding glass door at all the interesting things happening in the back yard, while all the time hoping that there would be chicken in his bowl that evening. In fact he liked chicken so much that his owners often joked about maybe they should get him a fluffy pet baby chick for him to play with someday.

Well, I am slowly coming back from my computer crash. My computer completely died with both hard drives wiped out. fortunately I had saved my art to an external hard drive and am now able to access my saved files. We bought a new computer and are still working on setting it up to a working order. I have lost a lot of things that made my life easier and I am really not too happy with my situation right now, but I have to go on anyway. My progress will still be slow but at least I am able to do some things. So I am going to post three things that I did while my computer was completely down. I already posted two of them to Ebay but I wasn't able to get them on the blog until now, so they have already sold, but I thought that I would put them here anyway. (see next three posts above)

While munching on some new spring vegetation Oscar Bunny noticed that he had a young chicken on his head wearing a ladybug hat. It might be a delusion, spring fever or just his imagination.

Stacking animals seems to be some kind of theme with me. Every so often I just have to draw and paint an animal stack. I don’t know why; I just like to do it.
I started this small format painting by drawing the design out with colored pencil and pen and ink on a piece of Strathmore tinted charcoal paper and then I mounted this paper to a heavier weight watercolor paper for strength and finished it with acrylic paint.
This little painting comes to you matted in a 5”X7” black matt with a foam core backer. If you would rather matt it into your own matt, it is easily removed.

Colorful spring Easter chickens in their new spring hats get ready for the Easter Parade.

This is another aceo about my fascination with multi-colored Easter chickens. I’m talking about the kind that you buy in the stores to put into your Easter basket arrangements. The old fashioned kind had orange paper covered wire feet and fluffy feathers with little black eyes. I have fond memories of these as a kid. They were found in my room posed with their wire feet bend around lots things.
Of course since I AM old fashioned and “no spring chicken” I like these kind best and I’m still fascinated with them.

It is early spring and the daffodils are in bloom, the robins are in the yard looking for yummy things to eat. “Look out little ladybug, you had better hide inside that flower for a while.”

This is an “I’m so happy that spring is coming” painting done using my colored pencils in my sketch book. I then cut it out and mounted the paper to a piece of Stonehenge paper for more strength. I went back in with acrylic paint for some accents and finished it with acrylic varnish. I will be sending it to you in an 8”X10” black matt with a foam core backer. With early spring my yard begins to be populated with tiny delicate purple flowers. I gathered two varieties of them together and brought them inside to sketch. As I sketched them in my sketch book I began to draw a little mouse beside them who seemed to be studying them along with me. The mornings are a little chilly, so it’s good to curl up behind the warmth of the daffodils.

This original aceo painting was done on plate 2ply bristol board in mostly colored pencil with a little watercolor to even out some of the tones. This bristol has the weight of a nice card stock and is a very good surface for colored pencil. Sometimes I like to just draw with my colored pencils. This media is my “comfort media” because it was the first art material that I ever used. I had a set of Prismacolor pencils as a child and remember some very pleasant times sitting cross legged on my bed in my room drawing with my colored pencils. It takes a little longer to smooth the tones and achieve depth with them, but I really enjoy working with them.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and very cold here, which is a good time for snuggling. What is more appropriate for that idea than two furry bunnies rubbing noses against a cool Valentine heart background?

Due to the winter storms, I have been having difficulties with my electricity and my satellite internet. Also, I still don’t have a replacement printer. That problem will take me a little longer to solve. However, I’m still working on my little paintings, although I don’t seem to be producing as fast as when I’m warm and cozy. Progress is slow, but not at a complete standstill yet.

Frosty is so grateful that he was given a big carrot nose and a wide brimmed hat. He can invite his friends to come and sit on his nose under his hat to chat and stay a while until the storm passes. He has made many friends this way and has become a very popular guy.

Shelter from the Storm – part two:
After I did the aceo painting called “Shelter from the Storm” a few weeks ago, I decided that I liked this theme so much that I made this larger piece and included a snowflake embellished matt to go with it. This painting was done on a 3½”X5½” piece of black Stonehenge paper. I used colored pencil and acrylic paint. The matt is embellished with my own hand painted snowflakes. The opening for the art is 3”X5” and the out side of the matt measures 5”X7”. (It can also be re-matted into your own matt if you like.)

..... R.I.P. (Really Irritating Printer)
Our printer broke this week-end. It just gobbled down $135. worth of ink spit it out all over the bottom inside of the printer and then proceeded to shut itself off for good. We have been trying to revive it but it’s looking hopeless.
So we have been looking into replacing it with a new one. (NO luck so far) It seems that they have "improved" the quality of the ink, made the cartridges smaller and the prices bigger. Disgusting!
However I'm still finding a little time to paint and I will be putting on some prints (that I already had made up) in Ebay + more original art soon.

While his sweetheart watched, Marshall Mouse showed off his ice skating skills with a special triple jump. Then as he came down his toe caught a very thin place in the ice, and “Whammmm!” he wiped out in the snow at the edge of the ice puddle, causing Marsha to laugh hysterically and Marshall’s face to redden with embarrassment.

I used Strathmore Illustration board, with most of my design done in colored pencil, I used acrylic paint in a wash technique much like watercolor and then I added acrylic highlights and accented the darks. It is finished it with a few coats of acrylic varnish and the edges are painted black for a nice finished presentation look.

A little hummingbird sits on a magic branch made of gold and ponders the enchantment of a starry night.

I made an aceo sized print of one of my past aceo paintings on Moab 140lb watercolor print paper and then worked over it with pencil, ink pens and acrylic paint changing things by adding highlights, dark accents and new design elements. The gold and silver paint is iridescent acrylic (doesn’t show up to well in my photos). This is essentially a new original aceo painting in that it is one of a kind (OOAK) and there will be no other piece exactly like this one. Also the edges are painted black and it is finished with a few coats of acrylic varnish.

This mouse couple is having a wonderful day skating on the ice on the frozen puddle just at the edge of the forest. Marsha Mouse has a new pink skating outfit and is so pleased to be showing it off, while Mitchell Mouse is especially proud to be her partner on the ice.

I used Arches 140lb hot press watercolor, drew out my design in colored pencil and then did my painting with watercolor and acrylic paint. Then because it was thinner than my other most recent pieces I mounted it to illustration board, finished it with a few coats of acrylic varnish and painted the edges black for a nice finished presentation look.

On a cold January day Morse & Misty Mouse build their “snow-mouse” in the snow outside their burrow, but they had better hurry up and finish because the flakes are getting bigger and the blizzard is coming.

Well, I thought that I had finished this series, but I have one more. And even although it is after Christmas I just had to do it. It seems to give my little story a better ending, and I think that you will see why……

“'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;”………
After the Christmas tree decorating mouse team had finished all of their work on all the trees and had their little Christmas party with Santa, the mice went home to their room in the wall of Santa’s house at the North Pole. Very tired from all of their work, they hung their little hats on the bed posts and quickly fell asleep in their warm little beds.
But Santa hadn’t forgotten them. When Santa’s work was done and all the toys were delivered to all the children of the world, and just before he settled down for his own long winter’s nap, he delivered presents to all the mice that had helped him decorate the trees. And you can bet that these presents were very nice because these little mice had been extra especially good this year.
And now we can all settle down for a long winter's nap.

This is “really” is the final piece in my Santa’s Christmas tree mouse decorating team series, well at least for this year. It was a lot of fun for me and I hope that you all enjoyed the journey.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

This is our Christmas tree. We have had it about 12 years now. It stands about a foot high and has little ornaments that I made permanently fixed to it and the lights and packages are fixed on it too. So I just take it out of the paper bag in the closet that I have labeled "Bag-O-Christmas", and set it on the table or the piano and plug it in. This takes all of about 2 minutes, and the same time to take it down. I love it!! I added the artist's manikin a few years ago. My mom made the little Snowman wall hanging behind it. (It goes in the Christmas paper bag too.) So all in all it takes me about 5 minuets to decorate for Christmas. Did I mention that I love it?

Eli Elf likes to walk Santa’s dog along the path that takes him through the Christmas tree forest.

First I used torn paper strips for a paper mache collage background on a hardboard aceo sized panel. Then I created the design using 4 green stickers shaping them for the heads and the bodies. I then used ink marker pens, colored pencil and acrylic paint to finish this art. The edges are painted black so it could be displayed without a frame if desired. (Maybe on a mini easel for example) There is lots of nice texture in this piece from the layered collage technique. It is finished with a few layers of semi-gloss acrylic varnish.

This is a “STICKERDOODLE”:
Those of you that have received items from me will know about what I call “Stickerdoodles”. This is the term that I have given to those sticker drawings that I do on the back of my mailing packages. For those of you who don’t know, I have an abundance of various colored stickers that I put on the back of the package and then draw and paint on them. Each stickerdoodle is different and unique. Sometimes I do a more elaborate version for an original ACEO painting for sale using the same idea. I paint or collage a background then I (permanently) glue down a sticker or a few stickers of various shapes that I draw and paint on and continue by using a variety of materials to see what I can create. This is more of a “doodle” and “creative exercise” then a preconceived plan. AND it’s a lot of fun!

But that’s not exactly true because Santa’s little mouse Christmas tree decorating team has just finished their work. The tree is all finished; Santa has left all the presents under it and filled all the stockings with goodies. Now it’s time to relax and have some refreshments with Santa. Some thoughtful child has left a big glass of milk and a plate of yummy cookies. I bet you always wondered if Santa really ate all those treats left for him. Well it turns out that he does, but he always has some help cleaning up the crumbs. And by the way, Santa’s glass of milk is ALWAYS half full.
